KAILUA - Last year, the New York Knights bested the Renegades in the SFL Championship game, while the Kailua Wyverns and the Grand Rapids Rollers missed the playoffs. The opening week of the Winter 2013 proved to provide an entirely different storyline than summers.
Saturday, in the league’s opener, Kailua gashed Dallas through the air, defeating Dallas 42-24. Quarterback Ohno Matsumoto, who had the league’s worst quarterback rating last year, had week one’s best figure — 128.70 — in the victory thanks to 400 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Dallas’ Johnny English earned a new career-high 132 rushing yards on 5.73 yards per carry against the Wyvern ‘D’. Kailua rookie Lawrence Kirkland had 229 receiving yards on 8 grabs for two scores in his debut.
Former Renegade defensive end Aurgile McCormick recorded 2 sacks, the only player to do so in week one. Dallas strong safety Ahmad Arrington had 2 interceptions, after nabbing 3 all of last season. Kailua built up a 35-7 lead at halftime and then put the game away on an interception returned for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
