KAILUA — Joseph Redfeather is one of the most well-known players in the SFL. He came over from the WAFL with Erik Barkley to run the New York Knights and in his first year with New York, he flourished, winning the league's first MVP and leading the Knights to a 45-41 Championship Game victory over Oklahoma City. Flash forward a year later, and Redfeather is back in the title game.
This time, he'll face his former team with his new crew - the San Francisco Bulldogs.
"I couldn't have asked for a more perfect situation," Redfeather said. "I have no bad blood towards getting traded, but I would like to prove to New York that I still have what it takes."
In the last two weeks, Redfeather has thrown for 6 touchdowns to 0 interceptions and since the team started 1-4, he's thrown 7 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions during San Francisco's four-game winning streak. He struggled last season in New York with no running game to back him and after the Knights misesd the playoffs, he ultimatly was dealt. While the gunslinger has had his fair share of struggles in his first year with San Francisco, the veteran is still proving he's got a little magic left in that right arm.
San Francisco is making their first apperance in the SFL Championship Game after upsetting the previously undefeated Crabs in the semifinal round, 31-21, down 21-7 early in the second quarter. Redfeather and Cooley were a big part of that comeback, converting numerous third and long situations in the second half. Redfeather knows he wouldn't be where he is today without his strong defense, however, a defense that tore it's way through opponents after signing defensive end Randall Watts.
"Honestly, he's been our MVP and should be considered as the MVP of this league," Redfeather said. "After Goodspeed got traded, it was only me on this team from the Summer 13 Championship team. It's not about anyone getting revenge back at New York except for me. They all just want to win a title.
New York defeated San Francisco in overtime in Week 2 this season, 20-13. No other player for San Francisco has ever been to the title game except for cornerback Marcus Dorsett, who won a title with Orlando last season.
"It's tough," Dorsett said. "There's a lot of new faces on this team and it's taken some time to gel. Owner Daley Holder has done a great job getting us into this position. I couldn't thank him enough for seeing my potential in the off-season."
For Redfeather, it'll be about proving a point Monday. For the rest of the Bulldogs, it's about making history, and joining the long list of teams that have won titles on the bay. San Francisco. New York. SFL Championship Game. Monday night at 6 p.m. CT, only on the SFL Network on Twitch.
