KAILUA — Park HeeChul has never been in the Kailua spotlight. As a Wyvern in two seasons, HeeChul rushed for 1,075 yards and 10 touchdowns. This season as New York's most reliable offensive weapon, HeeChul rushed for 1,263 yards and 11 touchdowns, not to mention his countless receptions, yards and scores in the passing game.
Now, HeeChul returns to the site of the start of his professional career a much better player, as he tries to bring New York its second title.
"It's surreal, it really is," HeeChul said. "New York owner Erik Barkley really saw my potential and took a big chance on me. I feel good, I'm healthy, I'm working hard. It's nice being back in Hawaii on a big stage like this."
The "Little Dynamo" as Knight fans call him, had the second most carries this season, behind Grand Rapids' David Badha. He typically will see 50+ touches per game, which is the most by any offensive player in the league this season. While the Knights have plenty of weapons on offense, HeeChul is their favorite, quite possibly the most dangerous threat on any offense and an MVP candidate.
"Guys a beast," said receiver Jake Legacy. "I'm not used to playing second fiddle in this offense, but I'll gladly do it for this guy. He's a bulldozer that has so much upper doby strength and has such great vision, it's insane."
The Knights reached the playoffs on a three-game losing streak. During that stretch, New York scored just 7 points in three third quarters. While HeeChul has been Mr. Effective for the Knights, St. Clair knows they'll need to mix it up and get everyone going against one of - if not the best defense in the league this season - San Francisco.
"I've got to do the job of getting Legacy, Miller, Studwell and HeeChul involved, not just Park," said quarterback Wes St. Clair. "All our guys are capable, I just have to find them."
New York beat San Francisco 20-13 in OT back in Week 2. In that game, HeeChul averaged just 2.0 yards per carry (32 carries, 64 yards) as St. Clair had to carry the load. HeeChul remembers the Bulldog run 'D' and would like nothing more than to gash them on the league's biggest stage. If anyone can do it, it's the Little Dynamo.
