SAN ANTONIO - In the busiest day of the SFL off-season so far some teams got candy and others got boxes of raisins in their Haloween pales as some top free agents made their final decisions today and the race for wide receiver Yuya Aiba took a turn in favor of the Legends, the first successful counter in league history.
Yiba now favors Honolulu and Oklahoma City over Cleveland as it's now Vipers owner Ronnie Nickens' turn to counter in hopes of landing his fourth wide receiver, along with a possible second counter attempt from Renegade owner Michael Irvine. Yiba spent a long time considering all the offers in a very close race. He said he would now not make a decision until at least Nov. 2.
Meanwhile, the approval stamp was busy Friday as top-tier quarterbacks Kevin Walker and Joseph Redfeather signed with their new teams. Redfeather is now officially a Renegade, after OKC's pitch to Redfeather blew him away. He signed a 2-year, $5.2 million deal.
"The Renegades brought me to Native American country," Redfeather said. "I feel very at home here already. These are my people and they deserve a championship team. We're going to get it done here."
Walker's Honolulu deal is for $6.1 million over 3 years.
"I was a little dissapointed that Mr. Walsh ended negotations early. Jaimie is a truly passionate owner and it should be a lot of fun building a new dynasty here in Hawaii."
Minneapolis signed receiver Ayanojyo Aburatsubo to a $7.5 million, $2.5 per year deal that will keep Aburatsubo a silver star and give him his biggest salary in his career. He'll play opposite from James Cooley, as Minneapolis jumps Cleveland's wide receiver corps, becoming the first team in league history to have a gold and a silver receiver. The Maulers also matched San Francisco's offer to tight end Marcus Campbell (3.6 million) and then raised to $4 million, keeping Campbell at his previous salary and dropping him down to a bronze star. With the signing of Campbell and the contract offer for Donald Miller, it would appear the Maulers will play with three wide receivers and a tight end, along with gold star quarterback Rocco Marconi. Minneapolis' offer to Jeb Gatlin leads after Cleveland's first contract offer was unsuccessful. The Vipers now have two counter offer options on the table.
Other players who signed Friday included OLB Zach Elpheage (CLE) - a 2-year, $4 million contract. Baltimore signed cornerback D.J. Greenwood to a 2-year, $2 million deal.
San Francisco, after losing the bid for Redfeather, has turned to their old quarterback Jasper Hart, in a ploy to bring him back to Bulldog country. That offer now likely means that former Dallas Stars quarterback Thomas Ranklins will go un-signed this off-season. Other big-name free agents without contract offers so far this off-season include David Badha (RB), Leeteuk Eunhyuk (DT), Justin Saunders (OLB), D.J. McCoo (OLB) and Lamar Davis (DE).
