MINNEAPOLIS - The Minneapolis Maulers proved - like the Baltimore Crabs last season - that they will take no time making a big splash in the SFL after they took down the defending champs in their preseason finale, 37-6 in their first home game. They outscored their two preseason opponents - who both made the championship game last season - 85-16.
All three of quarterback Rocco Marconi's star receivers reached the century mark: James Cooley (13 receptions, 213 yards, 2 TD's), Donald Miller (9 receptions, 106 yards, 2 TD's) and Ayanojyo Aburatsubo (11 receptions, 108 yards). It was Cooley's second 200-yard game of the preseason, proving that he can still be lethal in the SFL. Marconi did throw two interceptions, but nearly threw for 500 yards again (42/52, 488 yards).
New York struggled to move the ball consistantly all night, accounting for just 198 yards of offense. The Knights were just 2-for-15 on third down conversions, often due to poor play calling or poor route-running short of the sticks. Quarterback Wes St. Clair was 28-for-31 passing, but averaged just 4.6 yards per attempt. Rookie free safety Jesus Salvador led all defenders in the game with 10 tackles.
