SAN ANTONIO - The Simulation Football League announced last Saturday at halftime of the Baltimore Crabs and San Francisco Bulldogs Game of the Week contest that the SFL will be expanding the league from 8-12 teams.
UPDATED 3/12/15: Potential owners can now apply for franchise rights by clicking here. NOTE: Potential owners must send two e-mails to the league office (simulationfl@gmail.com): One e-mail will be the application, sent using the previous link. The other will be an e-mail with photos of team information (stadium, colors, logo, uniforms). Owners should not include any roster with their application - the player acquisition process has not been finalized.
"The time is right to grow our product," said Commissioner Cameron Irvine. "We've enjoyed tremendous success and continue to grow our following each and every season. We want to bring more people into the fold and add new wrinkles into our league - rivalries, different opponents, schedules ... being able to bring something new to the table each and every season is a good thing."
Last Saturday, the league also announced a new league calendar. Currently, the SFL plays a 2-game preseason schedule over a 3-week period, the regular season has 8 games per team over an 11-week period and the postseason includes a 4-team playoff, a Championship Game and an All-Star Game over a 3-week period, for a total of 17 weeks.
Moving forward, the league will have a 1-game preseason schedule over a 2-week period, the regular season will have 8 games per team over a 12-week period and the playoffs will expand to 6 teams over a 3-week period, with the All-Star Game moving to the same weekend as the Championship Game.
Teams will be split into two conferences and will play only teams from their conference during the regular season. The conferences will be reshuffled on a rotational basis each offseason. Teams will be able to protect one rival, who they will share a conference with every season. The conference champions will receive a first-round bye while the next four best records - regardless of conference affiliation - will play in the Wild Card round.
